Australia’s World Juniors team

Meet Australia’s team of 60 athletes, the largest ever for the World Athletics Under 20 Championships.

Meet Australia’s team of 60 athletes, the largest ever for the World Athletics Under 20 Championships.

32 young women and 28 young men will line line up in Cali, Colombia from 1-6 August. Australia was eligible to enter up to two athletes per event, provided they had met the event qualifying standard, as well as being able to enter relay teams.

In a sign of the depth of talent, Australia has filled its full quota in 24 of the 38 individual events, with there being representatives in all individual events except for men’s and women’s shot, hammer and multi events, and the men’s javelin and walk. Relay squads have also been named in all events, except for the men’s 4x400m.

Team Statistics

  • With the interruption of the COVID pandemic and Australia not sending a team to last year’s World U20 Championships in Kenya, only three athletes in the team have prior experience competing in an Australian team overseas: Ellie Beer (4x400m, Tokyo Olympic Games in 2021; World Championships and World Relay Championships 2019) and racewalkers, Olivia Sandery and Alanna Peart (World Racewalking Team Championships in Oman earlier this year).
  • Representatives by state: Victoria (18), Queensland (17), New South Wales (16), South Australia (5), Western Australia (4).
  • 30% of the team live outside of state capital cities
  • Clubs with most representatives: UTS Norths Athletics Club (7), University of WA Athletics Club (3), University of Queensland Athletics Club (3), Athletics Essendon (3).
  • Coaches with more than one representative (2 each): Angus McEntyre, Jared Tallent, Craig Mottram, Chloe Stevens, Jayden Russ and Andrew Lulham.
  • Coaches who have won Olympic or world championship medals as athletes:
    • Glynis Nunn (Olympic gold in heptathlon 1984)
    • Melinda Gainsford-Taylor (World Indoor Championships gold in 1995, silver in 1993 in 200m; bronze in 4x400m at 1995 World Championships)
    • Craig Mottram (World Championships 5000m bronze in 2005)
    • Jared Tallent (Olympic gold in 50km walk in 2012, silver and bronze in 50km and 20km walks respectively in 2008, silver in 50km walk in 2016; World Championships silver medals in 50km walk in 2015 and 2011, bronze in 2013).
  • Youngest athlete: Delta Amidzovski (15 years, 342 days at the commencement of the Championships).
  • Twins: Jasmin Guthrie (400m) and Isabella Guthrie (400m hurdles). Both are also in the 4x400m squad.

Team Levy

Each team member has to pay a $5,500 levy to secure their place on the team.

A team Go Fund Me page raised over $9,000 for the team. It has now closed. If you would like to still support individual athletes directly, you can do so via these pages.
