The Czech Republic’s Helena Fuchsova took out the pace in a very fast 55.04 seconds for the first lap, continuing through to 600m in an equally impressive 1:25.5.
With athletes scrambling for position behind her the major moves happened from the final turn into the home straight. Great Britain’s Kelly Holmes, then Mozambique’s Maria Mutola (the bronze medallist from Atlanta) and Switzerland’s Stephanie Graf all passed the tiring Czech. It was Mutola who was strongest down the home straight, passing Holmes for victory in a season’s best of 1:56.15, with Graf passing Holmes to set a personal best of 1:56.64 for silver ahead of Holmes’ 1:56.80.
Slovenia’s Brigita Langerholc recorded a personal best of 1:58.51 for fourth, while Fuchsova’s early heroics being rewarded with a personal best of 1:58.56 for fifth while Zulia Calatayud from Cuba also recorded a personal best of 1:58.66 in sixth place.
