Glenhuntly, Box Hill winners at Sandown

Around 900 runners took hot laps around Sandown Racecourse at today’s Athletics Victoria XCR’22 Sandown Road Relays.

Glenhuntly and Box Hill were the winners in the premier women’s and men’s races respectively, held over 6.2km leg (five for the women, six for the men).

The fastest leg of the day went to St Stephen’s Madeleine Murray running in the Division 2 race, who was almost half a minute faster than the next fastest runner, under 16 athlete, Madison King, in the Premier division.

Glenuntly were in the lead by the end of the second leg and King’s split – over two minutes faster than any runner on the third leg – made their lead unassailable, with further strong legs from Anna Kentwell and Cassie Little. In the end, their winning margin over South Melbourne was almost four minutes, with Essendon taking bronze with a strong final leg from Charlotte Wilson overtaking Melbourne University.

In the men’s race, Andre Waring anchored Box Hill with the fastest leg of the day, over coming a two minute deficit to break Bendigo Region’s winning streak during the 2022 XCR series. St Stephen’s took third place.

The opening leg featured a number of fast splits, with Glenhuntly junior Logan Janetzki changing first, with the overall second fastest split of the day at 18 minutes, 9 seconds.

Notably, Mentone’s Division 2 team finished just four seconds behind what would have been a podium finish in the Premier division. The Mentone team demonstrated good depth, with four runners under 19 minutes but with only one runner (Seth O’Donnell) recording a top 10 split.
