Myers went within four-hundredths-of-a-second of his personal best, stopping the clock at 3:33.30 to take victory at The Crest. Running a 55.50 second final lap, Myers hit the lead with 300m to go and held on down the straight after Wightman and the fast finishing Jesse Hunt made challenges.

Hunt set a new personal best of 3:33.64 to fall just short of the Olympic qualifying standard of 3:33.50, while Wightman was third in 3:34.31.

Jye Edwards, who previously held the fastest performance by an Australian in Australia with his 3:33.99 victory at the 2021 Australian Championships, was fourth in 3:34.42, with national champion Callum Davies setting a new personal best in fifth at 3:35.14.

The top 11 places broke 3:40 on the night.
