For Ed Goddard, running has never been just about medals or margins. It’s about freedom, rhythm, and building a life around what feels good.
“I think my approach to training and racing is now quite simple,” he says. “I want to train in the best ways possible, yet in a way that’s sustainable and enjoyable.”
It’s a mindset that’s shaped his rise as one of Australia’s most prolific road runners. From early promise on the junior scene to breaking the tape at the City2Surf, Goddard has carved his path through a mix of talent, tenacity, and staying true to what lights him up.

That might mean an early morning solo session around Sydney or a European detour for a new challenge, like his current trip abroad for the London Saucony 10K, where he finished fifth in 29:54 over 10km.
“Saucony has just opened their first Europe store and were holding a race around the City of London,” he explains. “I went over a few weeks early with Izzy, who was also racing. We raced in Ireland and spent a week in the heat in France en route to London.”
Rather than building his seasons around rigid periodisation, Goddard prefers to anchor his calendar on a few key goal races and explore from there, both geographically and mentally.
“I enjoy racing the Sydney and Australian road scene, and the last few years, picking a few goal races overseas to plan the seasons around,” he says. “Going forward there are some big years of goals ahead, so I look forward to working hard and seeing what’s possible.”
Running in Flow
If you’ve spotted Goddard mid-run, you’ll remember it. Hair flying behind him, shirt off, phone in hand, music on; he moves like someone completely at ease in his element.
It’s less about splits and more about flow.
That effortless, self-propelled rhythm has become part of his identity — equal parts training and meditation — a physical and mental groove that keeps him coming back day after day.
“I love being able to train in places like Sydney, or London overseas—areas that are exciting for both easy jogs and workouts,” he says. “And I love to balance that with things I find holistically enjoyable like the beach, and enjoying my down time!”
This grounded approach— high-volume training, sure, but without over-complication— has kept Goddard consistent and happy in a sport that can often get lost in metrics.
A Love Letter to Sydney’s Running Scene
Goddard has run, and won, plenty of races, but it’s Sydney’s roads and community that continue to mean the most.
“City2Surf is such an iconic race to have won,” he says. “But honestly, every race win in Sydney is amazing. It’s such a great community with high-level events such as the Harbour 10K.”

He’ll be back for the Real Insurance Harbour 10K on Sunday 27 July, a race he knows well and speaks of fondly.
“I think the course is as enjoyable as any race anywhere,” he says. “Being on the harbour in the city, on a flat and fast 10K track—I think it stands out as a great opportunity for both PBs and a great experience.”
Building a Life Around the Run
If there’s a thread running through everything Goddard says, it’s balance. A love of the sport, yes. But not at the cost of the bigger picture.
“Honestly, I’m just building in the little things,” he says. “I swim every day all year around, which I find good for the body and the mind. Other than that, I’m just doing things in life I love and training hard around that.”
At 27, Goddard is entering what many consider the prime of a distance runner’s career. His goals? Just to keep improving.
“Same as last year,” he says with a grin. “To run PBs. If I can keep doing that then I’m on the right trajectory.”
With his laid-back style, sharp racing instincts, and ability to find joy in the work, Goddard isn’t just running fast: he’s running free.
