Deep fields at inaugural Albert Park 5km

A thousand runners took to the road for Athletics Victoria’s inaugural 5km offering at Albert Park.

Run over essentially the same course as the Lakeside10, except with just one out-and-back lap rather than two, the depth of Victorian club running was on show with 76 men breaking 15 minutes and 46 women breaking 18 minutes.

Ed Marks took line honours in the men’s race, breaking the tape in under 14 minutes with a run of 13:54. Second across the line was U20 athlete Charles Barrett (14:00) with fellow U20 runner Yohanes Dagnaw and South Australia’s William McCann running 14:02.

U18 runner Lucas Chis ran a strong 14:08 while U16 and U14 winners were Jae Hao Chan (15:36) and John Brivulis (16:52) respectively.

In the women’s race it was Klara Dess who pulled away for victory in 15:56 after a close contest with Stephanie Kelly (16:04) and Sarah Klein (16:11).

U14 runner Andison Mole ran prominently, finishing fifth across the line in 16:26 while Teagan Smullen (18:15), Leanne Ellis (16:53) and Imogen Baker (16:40) took out the U16, U18 and U20 titles respectively.

Qambar Ali Akhteyari (13:31) and Elise Richards (16:06) were the first male and female finishers in the mixed wheelchair race.
