Check out the Top 10 performances from State Championships held across the weekend in New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia and Western Australia.
This list is ordered using the World Athletics Scoring Tables, which are used to determine World Athletics Rankings. We’ve taken the best performance from an athlete during their championship e.g. if a heat time was faster than their finals performance.
The standout performances were World Championships qualifying performances from Joel Baden in the high jump at the Victorian Championships (stay tuned for a feature article about Joel) and Michelle Jenneke in the 100m hurdles at the NSW Championships. The NSW Championships had by far strongest depth of performance of the four meets.
#1 – Joel Baden – High Jump – Victorian Championships – 1206 points
The 26-year-old leapt to a new personal best of 2.33m in his opening competition of the season to record the only performance from the Victorian Championships that makes this Top 10 list. It was the ninth highest jump ever by an Australian and moves Baden to #3 on the Australian all-time list.
#2 – Michelle Jenneke – 100m hurdles – NSW Championships – 1192 points
In top form following a World Championships qualifier at the Maurie Plant Meet, Jenneke went even faster at Sydney Olympic Park Athletic Centre with a 12.69 second run. It was her second fastest ever behind her 12.66s PB set in June last year, and her fastest ever run in Australia.
#3 – Jacob McCorry – 110m hurdles – NSW Championships – 1142 points
A perfect 2.0 m/s tailwind provided McCorry the conditions to lower his personal best to 13.59 seconds. The performance moves him to equal sixth on the Australian all-time list.
#4 – Emily Britton – 100m hurdles – NSW Championships – 1138 points
Behind Jenneke at the NSW titles was Emily Britton, who lowered her personal best in the heats before running 13.09 seconds in the final. The performance moved the 21-year-old to 12th on the Australian all-time list, a big improvement on her pre-season 13.59s personal best.
The heat was just a warm-up for the final.
Bang !
13.09 (1.4m/s) #12 Australian all-time & her fourth consecutive PB…one name she moved pass was Olympian Penny Gillies who was watching from the stands… https://t.co/1oUdozE7Te— David Tarbotton (@David_Tarbotton) March 5, 2023
#4 – Aidan Murphy – 200m – SA Championships – 1138 points
Equal fourth on the list is South Australia’s Aidan Murphy, who blasted a 20.54s run in the heats (+0.8), before taking out the final in 20.89 seconds (+0.2). He also won the 100m in a new personal best of 10.33 seconds (WIND)
#6 – Georgia Winkcup – 3000m steeplechase – NSW Championships – 1127 points
Tokyo Olympian Georgia Winkcup recorded a resounding win at the NSW Championships, clocking a season’s best 9:46.81, to sit on top this season’s Top Lists, bettering Brielle Erbcaher’s 9:47.95 run from at the Adelaide Invitational.
#6 – Jackson Rowe – 200m – NSW Championships – 1127 points
Rowe took out a quality NSW 200m championship, riding a 2.7 m/s tailwind to a 20.60 second performance. When adjusted for assisting wind, the run rates the same 1127 points as Georgia Winkcup’s steeplechase run.
#8 – Christopher Ius – 200m – NSW Championships – 1117 points
Second to Rowe in the NSW title, Ius’s run of 20.67 seconds is rewarded with 1117 points on the World Athletics tables.
#9 – Abbie Taddeo – 100m hurdles – NSW Championships – 1116 points
Taddeo’s bronze medal run behind Jenneke and Britton in 13.25 seconds would usually be good enough to win most state titles, most of the time.
#10 – Joshua Azzopardi – 100m – NSW Championships – 1112 points
Azzopardi was the fastest performance across the state championships in the blue ribband men’s event, with a 10.28 second run.
#10 – Samantha Dale – Long Jump – NSW Championships – 1112 points
In a thrilling competition, Dale’s opening round jump of 6.44m would have been good enough for victory, but her final round jump of 6.52m (+0.6) was the best of the day. Behind her Katie Gunn set a new personal best of 6.41m with her final round jump, leaping into the medals ahead of Alyssa Lowe (6.38m) and Elizabeth Hedding (6.24m).
