Myers becomes Australia’s fastest ever 800m/1500m runner

Cameron Myers has continued his undefeated run in 2026 with a 1:44.05 800m.

The 19-year-old Australian 1500m champion took victory at the Puma Nitro Lange Laufnacht in Karlsruhe, Germany, by over a second. Myers entered the race with a PB of 1:47.11 from January 2024, but produced a remarkable three-second improvement to move to equal sixth on the Australian all-time list and further underline his status as one of the world’s brightest middle-distance talents.

The race itself was as impressive as the time. Myers found himself at the back of the field through the opening 200 metres, covering the first quarter in approximately 25.8 seconds before gradually working his way forward with a 25.5-second second 200m. After passing 400m in around 51.3 seconds, he maintained contact through a 27.1-second third segment before unleashing a devastating final 200m of approximately 25.7 seconds.

The race was Myers first since winning the 1500m/5000m double at the Australian Championships in early April, and was his seventh win of the year.

With the run Myers can claim the crown of having Australia’s best combined 800m/1500m performances, as judged by World Athletics Ranking Scores, overtaking Australian 800m record holder.
