Tim O’Shaughnessy coached junior distance runners Amy Bunnage and Logan Janetzki scored the most convicing victories of the Australian Trials for the World Cross Country Championships.
Bunnage, who is bound to attend Stanford University, won the junior women’s 6km race by one minute, twenty-two seconds in a time of 20:22. The performance continued a strong season for the 17-year-old, following an Australian U18 and race record at the Lisa Ondieki 3000m at the Zatopek:10, where she narrowly missed breaking the 9 minute barrier with a run of 9:00.60.
Janetzki was also unheeded in the junior men’s 8km race, breaking away from Archie Noakes for a 26 second margin of victory in a time of 24:18.
“It feels so good! I have been thinking about this race for years, I have always wanted to run here and I am happy to get the win,” said Janetzki.
“I was really close [to World Juniors] on the track but couldn’t perform at Nationals, so I’m really happy to do it in cross country which is my favourite event.”
Other junior athletes to score automatic places in the Australian team for the World Cross Country Championships in Bathurst were Gabrielle Schmidt and Gabrielle Vincent in the women’s race, and Noakes and Jack Coomber in the men’s race.
