Merry Christmas & Happy New Year

What an amazing year 2021 was. A different year to be sure, but with lots of great things to reflect upon.

A different year to be sure, due to the continued impact of COVID, but with lots of great things to reflect upon.

Globally, the Tokyo Olympics took centre stage. What an amazing meet, with remarkable world records and fantastic contests! Australian athletes did us proud with medals to Nicola McDermott, Ash Moloney and Kelsey-Lee Barber, with another 11 athletes recording top 8 finishes.

I’ve reflected on a few activities of Inside Athletics this year and want to say a sincere ‘thank you’ for your interest and involvement. Inside Athletics is a passion hobby project of mine that I hope gives back a little to the sport that has given me so much.

This year the following took place:

  • Photos: I found time to get behind the camera more than the last few years and capture performances from grassroots to the elite in our sport.
  • Systems: Behind the scenes work on systems to make your experience better, like migrating my photo collection and setting up a new email system to automates tasks.
  • Stats: Some deep dives into the complex statistical beast of the World Athletics Rankings, relevant for some athletes to qualify for the Olympics.
  • Athletics Track Directory: A big increase in listings added by the athletics community – littles and bigs –  it now has just short of 200 tracks listed.
  • Favourite Tracks: Engaged the passion of local athletics communities around the Australia’s Favourite Track and Australia’s Favourite Grass Track competitions.
  • Photo Competition: Funded a Photography Competition for hobbyist and amateur photography. Casey Sims won both the Best Track Photo and Best Field Photo.
  • Online Shop: Ticked over 1,000 customers to the online shop, providing replacement spikes and expanded the range to include socks and shoelaces.

The final point is one that has absolutely exceeded my expectations. It feels great to assist athletes obtain the tools of their trade and leaves me with some additional funds that will help create even more content in 2022. I have some ideas about this, but please also let me know what you would like to see.

Until then, best wishes for a safe and happy festive season!

Yours in athletics,

Tim McGrath
