Inside Athletics is an athletics website by Tim McGrath that celebrates Australian athletics.
The site features over 40,000 photos of Australian athletics from 2007 onwards, blog posts, results, an online shop to purchase replacement spikes and a directory of Australian athletics tracks.
Our photos are freely available for personal and community use — we appreciate a shout out or link back to our site if possible.

History & Highlights
Inside Athletics has existed in various format, starting off as a collaboration between David Byrne and Tim McGrath. Dave was an Australian representative at the world cross country and world junior championships with PBs ranging from 3:40.98 (1500m) to 29:06.67 (10,000m), while Tim had more modest PB’s of 1:53.03 (800m) and 3:52.39 (1500m).
As competing became less of a priority we both wanted to find a way to give back to the sport we love and which had given us so much.
Inside Athletics’s origins stem from 2007 when Dave created the title as an e-magazine which was supported by Athletics NSW (where Tim worked at the time). The title was relaunched in 2009 as a website, blog and photography database. The site was regularly updated until 2014 and served as a progressive voice celebrating athlete achievements and advocating for change within the administration of Australian athletics. After a brief break during 2015 the site was redeveloped in 2016.
In 2012 the website was incorporated into the National Library of Australia’s Pandora collection as a publication of national significance.
A special print edition of the Inside Athletics magazine served as the official meet program for the Sydney Track Classic in 2011 when Tim and Dave were contracted by Athletics NSW to manage the local area marketing for the event.
David now focuses his attention on distance running website The Long Run and on running ultra marathons, while Tim enjoys getting behind the camera at athletics events when time permits.
In recent years Inside Athletics has expanded to create The Athletics Track Directory – with the aim of providing a listing of every athletics track in Australia – and selling Australia’s largest range of replacement spikes. Most recently we’ve launched Australia’s newest running website: run2.au
