Waring and Downie winners at Hanging Rock

The start of Athletics Victoria’s winter season was no picnic, with a challenging course testing runners. Andre Waring and Katherine Downie handled the conditions best with comfortable victories to kick start their winters.

A deceptive cross country course held over 3km and 5km laps encompassed flat, smooth sections around the Hanging Rock racecourse and dry, dusty and rugged sections on bushland trails that made the course unsuitable for spikes.

Waring won the men’s 8km race by 17 seconds in 24 minutes, 13 seconds ahead of Matt Buckell (24:31) and Liam Cashin (24:38).

Katherine Downie

In the women’s race Katherine Downie ran away from the field for close to a half-minute victory, covering the course in 29 minutes, 21 seconds from Charlotte Wilson (29:50) and Rachel McGuinness (30:04).
