Indoor records tumble – Results Wrap 14 February 2021

Three Australian indoor records and a best on record were recorded in the United States.

Ollie Hoare set an Olympic qualifier over 1500m, indoors, in winning the New Balance Grand Prix in New York in 3:32.35.

“I love running indoors, even though I’m an Australian,” said Hoare, 24, who moved to seventh on the world indoor all-time list.

“I just really wanted to run under that Olympic standard (3:35.00) today.”

Hoare’s performance makes him the fourth fastest Australian all-time, regardless of surface, behind outdoor marks by Stewart McSweyn (3:30.51), Ryan Gregson (3:31.06) and Simon Doyle (3:31.96). Incredibly, and foreboding for the future, it is over a second-and-a-half faster than his outdoor personal best of 3:34.63.

Charlie Hunter set two Australian records in the space of 24 hours in Arkansas. First, he improved his own mile record to 3:53.49, from the 3:54.54 he set a fortnight ago. Less expectedly, he backed up with a negative split 1:45.59 800m run (53.28s through 400m) to take two seconds off Joseph Deng‘s previous mark of 1:47.27 set in 2019.

Four other Australians broke four minutes for the mile indoors over the weekend: Pat Tiernan 3:56.82 in winning in Seattle, and Jack Anstey winning in 3:58.85 in Ames, Iowa, followed in second by Adam Fogg (3:59.03) in his maiden sub-4 minute clocking. Also breaking the four minute barrier for the first time was Jackson Sharp (3:59.25) in winning in Iowa City, Iowa. Fogg and Sharp become the 75th and 76th Australians to break four minutes for the mile.

Morgan McDonald ran a huge negative split, with a 4:02 second mile, placing third in the two-mile in New York in 8:14.92. The two-mile distance is rarely run by Australians, but McDonald’s run is the fastest on record indoors by an Australian, bettering Kerry O’Brien‘s 1971 run on 8:19.2, which was a world record at the time.

Action in Australia centered on the ACT Championships, where Liz Clay moved to second on the Australian all-time list in the 100m hurdles. Clay clocked 12.72 seconds (1.3) to equal the AIS Track & Field Centre track record set by Sally Pearson in 2008. Behind her were personal and season bests: Celeste Mucci breaking 13 seconds for the first time with 12.98 seconds, Abbie Taddeo lowering her personal best to 13.05 seconds (after having set a 13.18 second PB in the heats) and Michelle Jenneke continuing to improve race after race with a 13.16 second run.

In the field Brooke Stratton continued her good form with a season’s best jump of 6.72m, bettering her 6.71m set on the same track in December.

The ‘blue ribband’ race, the 100m, saw a dominant victory for Rohan Browning in 10.27 seconds ahead of Jack Hale (10.44) and Jake Penny (10.49). Bree Masters defended her women’s title in 11.57 seconds, but it was Celeste Mucci with the fastest time of the meet, with a 11.47 second personal best in the semi-finals. Mucci did not line up for the final.
