Top 8 set to miss first round in crowded Glasgow sprint program

The top 8 seeds in the 100m, 200m and 400m are set to be granted a bye into the semi-final stage at the Commonwealth Games.

Aidan Murphy is the only Australian likely to benefit when final start lists are released. The 22-year-old has the 5th fastest personal best in the 200m at 19.88, set in finishing second at this year’s Australian championships.

There are 89 men and 67 women entered in the 100m, with only three rounds to be run. If all confirm, and with the top 8 removed, that would leave 9 first round heats for the men and 8 heats for the women on Scotstoun’s blue 8 lane track. With space for only 24 athletes to line up in for 3 semi-finals, it will likely mean only the heat winner and the next fastest times will progress to the finals, before a more traditional top 2 and next 2 progression from the semi-finals to the final applying.

The other sprints, except for the men’s 200m, are slightly less congested, with 86 men/55 women in the 200m and 55 men/32 women in the 400m. Each event has three rounds scheduled.

The fastest sprinters in each event are:

  • Men’s 100m: Ferdinand Omanyala from Kenya at 9.77
  • Women’s 100m: Adaejah Hodge from British Virgin Islands at 10.77
  • Men’s 200m: Zharnel Hughes from England at 19.73
  • Women’s 200m: Adaejah Hodge from British Virgin Islands at 21.92
  • Men’s 400m: Jereem Richards from Trinidad and Tobago at 43.72
  • Women’s 400m: Dejanea Oakley from Jamaica at 48.79
