Compared to Pyramid Spikes, the Christmas Tree Spike design is far more modern. Christmas Tree Spikes are also known as Compression Tier Spikes.
The design of Christmas Tree Spike features a geometry of flat steps, rather than having a pointy tip. This means that there is a greater flat surface area of the spike that comes into contact with the track, when compared with Pyramid Spikes.
The design of Christmas Tree Spikes has been touted by some spikes and track surface manufacturers as being preferable to Pyramid Spikes on the grounds that Christmas Tree Spikes will not pierce the track surface and will return more energy to the athlete by compressing the track surface. However, a scientific study found 'the notion that compression spikes have less track penetration is unfounded.' That said, in the same study the Christmas Tree Spike design was found to provide larger energy returns than other spike designs, albeit that the measured energy return from all spike styles 'was relatively small.'
While some spiked shoes have Christmas Tree Spikes permanently embedded in them, most contain a thread which is screwed into spike wells. This makes them easily replaceable when the time comes, with replacement spikes.
Christmas Tree Spikes will wear down over time with use. Our spikes are made from quenched and tempered steel, which maximises their strength and durability. When taken care of, the spikes will last a long time before needing replacement.
Although they can be used for most events, 7mm Christmas Tree Spikes are generally not favoured by athletes competing in long distance or steeplechase events. For other events (sprints, middle distance and jumps) whether an athlete prefers Christmas Tree Spikes or Pyramid Spikes is a personal preference.
