In overcast, windy conditions Catriona Bisset and Grant Szalek produced the standout performances on the final day of the 2019 Victorian Championships at Lakeside Stadium.

Melbourne University’s Bisset led from start to finish in the 800m, crossing the line for victory in a new personal best of 2:03.03.

Western Australia’s Grant Szalek took out the high jump with a leap of 2.21m – the highest recorded so far by an Australian during the domestic season.

Heptathlete Celeste Mucci had a busy day, competing in both the 200m and high jump. In the 200m the 19-year-old recorded the fastest time in the semi-finals with a 24.81 second (-1.2) clocking. However, she withdrew from the final and subsequently placed third in the high jump with a 1.75m clearance – equal to the winning height but separated on countback.

With a better clearance record it was Denise Synder who took gold in the high jump, with Box Hill’s Rachel Limburg taking the silver.

With Mucci not contesting the 200m final, Brittany Burkitt’s closest competition was Jess Gulli-Nance. However, Burkitt prevailed 24.58s to 24.73s (0.6) to take out the sprint double, having won the 100m last weekend in 11.58s (1.8).

However, it was Mia Gross who recorded the fastest time of the meet, clocking 24.03 seconds (0.3) in winning the Under 20 event from Olivia Honey (24.82s).

For the men, Will Johns recorded his fourth consecutive state title in the 200m, showing the field a clean pair of heels with a 21.43 second clocking aided by a 1.8 m/s tailwind.

In the final event of the meet, the 800m, Melbourne University’s Matthew Scott was victorious. His winning time of 1:50.90 saw him finish half a second ahead of South Australia’s Sam Russell (1:51.45), with Athletics Chilwell’s Grant Muir in third in 1:51.90.
